Ebbe origine da un fatto accaduto alla vista di tutti nel 1638, quando nella casa di un certo Giuseppe Peloso, si vede lacrimare un quadro della Santa Vergine. La casa venne demolita e dalle sue ceneri, fu eretta la chiesa attuale avente forma circolare.
